About Us
The Center is an international, private, nonprofit organization headquartered in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. Founded in 1977 by the Rev. Marie M. Fortune, the Center is an interreligious ministry addressing issues of sexual and domestic violence. Our goal is to engage religious leaders in the task of ending abuse, and to serve as a bridge between religious and secular communities. Our emphasis is on education and prevention.
We have educational materials useful for: social service agencies, counselors, schools (both public and religious), clergy, lay leaders, seminary faculty and students, churches and synagogues, libraries, health care providers, law enforcement agencies, and women's programs.
Our Philosophy
We believe that in order to end violence against women and children, we must promote institutional and social change. We call upon religious communities of all faiths to assume leadership in changing institutional policies and cultural norms that allow sexual and domestic violence to continue. We work towards healing and justice, believing that justice-making is a crucial step in the healing process. Our goal is ethical justice for victims, meaning: acknowledgment of the wrong done, protection from further harm, accountability of the offender, restitution, and vindication.
